My “top secret” car plan for the next year or two is working out quite well so far, and they just got better since I found this sexy beauty last night!
I met this very nice guy, who owns this ‘99 996 Carrera with the infamous 3.4L F6 that was known to crack cylinder heads and have IMS issues(as all non-turbo 996 and ‘05-08 997s do). This is what I consider the best year 996 for a few reasons:
1. The dual-row IMS is considered to be the most reliable of all the IMS cars
2. It’s the last year of almost all mechanical 911s, last year with throttle by wire driving
3. They’re the “least desirable” which means lower prices for me! ;)
He bought his 996 with around 136k miles for $8500, the best damn price I’ve ever heard for these cars. Then his cylinder heads cracked, and as a result, he spent about $4k to partially rebuilt the motor, and that includes the IMS. He spotted me because of my 944 and offered a ride.
We talked for a while, and he’s got and had quite the collection of cars; featuring many S14s, 240s and a Corvette. He’s planning on using the 996 as a track day car, but he told me he doesn’t hold on to cars for too long, so he said he’d sell the car for $12k when he’s ready to sell it in a couple years. Conveniently enough, I plan on selling the ST within the next year.
My response: “Give me a year, and I’ll have that car”. Now that I’m working every day now and starting my second job in a week, putting more hours in both. Come next summer, if it’s still here, I will have that car whatever it takes dammit!! (O_o)

at 12k that’s a screaming deal. I like the simple 996’s.

You gotta dream...

That’s extremely cheap. You can’t even get one for that here in the UK, where most cars over 10 years old can be bought for a partially eaten mars bar.

And this is the most simplistic 996 that can possibly be had! It’s everything I want in a car! No frilly touch screen and fancy adaptive suspension. No LED Bi-Xenon cornering headlights or any of that stuff. Just a basic and simple driver’s car with early ‘00s complexity and preventative maintenance already done to it! :)

I’d rather have one of these than the turbo’s that keep getting articles. If all else fails you know a Metzger flat-6 will fit.

This is just one of those moments where I just cannot be talked down from this one. Like my 944 which I bought on a whim because the price was just too good, I’m going to do everything in my power to have that car in my driveway, whatever the costs.

I laughed at the Live to Win reference. Solid work, K Roll.

What am I supposed to make of that? It's a flippin mower FFS! (Pun intended to be not funny)

If it’s your dream car and you’re prepared for it (ie have money saved for repairs) I don’t see why you shouldn’t go for it. It is a good deal if the car is overall in decent shape.

Haha Fantastic, thanks! If I wasn’t on my phone, I would have simply posted the song itself, or the South Park montage. :p

OH YES

A local dealership had a boxter for sale with severe engine issues (I assume IMS failure) for like 4k. wouldn’t have paid that much, but if I had the means.... despite the low buy in I couldn’t justify it (hey baby, you know our savings? I got a broken car!), it was probably auctioned/parted/junked. too bad.

Car has no rust too! He’s only had it since January. :p
I’m not prepared for it right now(I wish), but now it’s time to hard or go home, because an opportunity like this only happens ONCE.

I think I was a sloth in a past life, hope to get back there some day.

Thank GOD for being young and single. More monies for ze cars and ze parts and then I’ll worry about relationship stuff. :p
BTW you should totally say it’s a future “Investment”. ;)
Nah, even I wouldn’t touch that Boxtser, I wouldn’t even look at it from afar.

SLOTHS FTW!

Will you get enough from the sale of the FoST to cover it?

Nice! I’ll say the same thing I always say - have your mechanic do a complete pre-purchase inspection so you know what you’re getting into.

Doing the math, I’ll be very damn close with selling it. I can get at minimum, $19.5k for the ST, maybe a little more with my set of winter wheels and tires. But I also have a loan to pay off on that car at the same time. I’ll have payed off about $6k of the $15k loan on the car just close to the end of this year, leaving roughly $9k to pay off. I really want this to happen by this time next year. I’ll be making at least $6-7k this summer alone minus college books and such.
I should have at least $15k if I’m extremely frugal and save every single cent I have when I’m comfortably ready to buy, should it still be around.

Of course! I had a mechanic come check out the 944 when I bought it. It was really a once-over, but still, aside from the worn out suspension which I’ll be tackling in a month or two, this car has been extremely reliable. Everything they said about the car nightmare-wise hasn’t happened to me and the ownership has been the best of any car I’ve had!

Ah, looks great on white! A prefaceift 996 C2 with a manual is very high on my list of the next potential cars as well, the problem is that they still cost at least 10k gbp here, and there are many awesome cars on my list that do cost a lot less.

Good luck getting the cash together then, be pretty cool if you manage it.
